In my case there wasn’t enough room for the amount of speakers I wanted. So in order to get a 3-way setup in my doors I needed to make custom fiberglass speaker pods. Luckily the bottom of my door had a removable pocket/speaker grill that would be the perfect spot for my pods, and would blend in perfect for a stock look.

I didn’t want it to look like there was just a gauge stuck on top of my steering column, so I decide to do something custom.* It’s pretty easy to make if you have some ability to work with fiber glass.* I got a used steering column trim since I didn’t want to ruin the only one I had, you can get one of these off of www.car-parts.com.* After that, I searched ebay for the cheapest pillar gauge holder I could find, I found an Impala gauge holder for about $15.*

Supplies needed
Carbon fiber cloth
Clear resin
Spray glue
sandpaper varying from 100-1000 grit

This technique is referred to as overlay. Usually used to cover interior pieces with CF. This can be used for exterior parts but the technique uses the stock piece and you mold the CF over the piece. The stock piece remains in place, so the finished piece is slightly larger than the stock piece. This involves considerably more hand work. The concept is covering the piece with carbon and resin. Then more resin to build up the thickness. Most of this resin is sanded off until a smooth surface is achieved. This is time consuming but the end result is worth the effort. After all, you’re doing this to make your car look great.

My car doesn’t have any support in the way of skirts so I am looking for a set myself. Since side skirts aren’t that complex of a part, like a front lip or bumper with curves, they are some what interchangeable. They usually need very little modification to make them fit another car, trim them in legnth a little, or find a way to mount them. All you need to do is find a set that suits your taste and is close to the right size. So I figured I’d start this thread so we can all post the size of our wheel bases and get an idea what skirts will fit which car.

If you have a separate corner light then chance are it can be done. The first thing I recommend you do is get an extra set of headlight so you have plenty of time to work on it, and you don’t destroy your only set of headlight. Not every retrofit will be the same, some things I did on mine may not work with yours. My write-up is meant to be a guide, and not a specific how-to.

The first step is obvious, you need to separate the lenses from the headlight so you can figure out how everything is going to work. With my car it was easy, the lenses were held in using butle rubber. To remove it I turned on the oven in the kitchen to 150-200* and set the lights inside to heat up. I gave them about 10 minutes ( make sure you keep an eye on them) for the rubber to warm up and then I began to pry them apart. There were locking tabs on the bottom of the light, so I had to lift them over the tabs and SLOWLY I pried the lenses off. Now this is how I got my lenses off, I have heard of many people having to cut their lenses off with a dremal because it was bonded to the housing. It’s up to you to figure out how to remove yours.

It will work for all cars with a separate or chrome grill, but the process may vary depending on the car. This should help you get the basic idea how to go about making one for yourself.

Its a good Idea to get an extra grill before attempting this. I got mine from a junk yard on line. The first time I tried this I broke the grill because I was in a rush. So take your time!

I decided to make one myself similar to the style I saw made for VW’s by a company called Wet Works Garage. It basically looks like the same thing that came factory on the BMW trunks. I searched on ebay and I was able to get an aftermarket one for around $25 made for the 90-96 BMW 3 series. This worked out to be the best spoiler for the modification.
